Here's a letter from Maryland Del. Sandy Rosenberg (D-41st) of Baltimore, writing about his efforts (along with fellow Jewish legislator Paula Hollinger) to support embryonic stem cell research were stymied by Ehrlich and his allies.
Chutzpah!
Last week's Jewish Times advertisement for Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (page 43) called him a national leader on funding stem cell research.
In Annapolis, we have a term for this — chutzpah!
In 2005, two of the governor's Cabinet secretaries submitted written testimony in opposition to the embryonic stem cell research legislation introduced by state Sen. Paula Hollinger (D-11th) and myself. Cabinet members do not oppose legislation of this significance without the approval of the Governor's Office.
This past session, the governor did provide money for stem cell research in both his operating and capital budgets. However, his budget bill did not specify whether this money could be used for embryonic stem cell research. In addition, the governor opposed our legislation that provided for embryonic stem cell research and banned human cloning — until after it had passed the General Assembly.
