From Fred Wertheimer, one of Washington's strongest voices for political reform:
Enormous credit is due to Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) for today's House victory for the American people. From the opening day of this Congress, Speaker Pelosi has provided extraordinary and unswerving leadership for the passage of fundamental ethics rules reforms and lobbying disclosure reforms, which the House has now achieved. We greatly appreciate the central role that Speaker Pelosi has played in the passage of these landmark reforms.
Representative Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) also deserves enormous credit for his skillful and committed leadership on behalf of effective disclosure of the contributions that lobbyists and lobbying organizations raise and bundle for members of Congress, political party committees and others.
We also very much appreciate the strong and effective leadership that House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) has provided for the landmark ethics and lobbying reforms passed by the House.
Wertheimer said about the Democratic bill:
These are ''big-time'' fundamental reforms that will end the secrecy surrounding the multiple ways in which Washington lobbyists use money to curry favor and gain access and influence with members of Congress.
The requirement for members of Congress, presidential and other candidates, political parties and leadership PACs to disclose the contributions that lobbyists and lobbying organizations raise and ''bundle'' for them is a momentous breakthrough in informing the public about the ways of Washington.
The reforms will also fundamentally change the Senate ethics rules to prevent lobbyists and lobbying organizations from providing gifts, meals, entertainment and trips to Senators. The House adopted very similar ethics reforms at the beginning of this year.
