"Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel"
- Samuel Johnson
Mr. Johnson was surely mistaken if he categorized all expressions of patriotism negatively. But he was dead on in describing the most recent disgusting behavior of Representative Jack Kingston (R-GA).
Kingston recently charged on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher that Senator Barak Obama "may not love the nation he wants to lead." His proof— he claimed that Senator Obama won't say the Pledge of Allegiance. When confronted with the utter falseness of the charge, Kingston's response was that the interviewer should "lighten up...Maher's show is about entertainment."
Kingston clearly has no shame and is a man of low integrity.
However, the GOP could show some courage and true patriotism if their presumptive nominee, John McCain, would repudiate such shameful use of patriotism by one of his supporters.
