The federal government's separation between Church and State just shriveled further as President Bush signed a bill transferring a 43-foot high cross from San Diego city property to government-owned land with the powers of eminent domain.
According to the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union), the bill "dangerously seeks to circumvent the Establishment Clause by using taxpayer money to support a 43-foot Latin cross on government-owned land."
As the ACLU explains, this bill is a manifestation of utter disregard for the Establishment Clause that has been so critical to allowing Jews to be comfortable, first class American citizens.
As the ACLU points out, this blatant governmental "support of a particular religious symbol disregards the diversity of religions in our society, and amongst our nation's veterans and service members."
The existence of a Mount Soledad Veteran's Memorial is not the problem here - on private land, it would be a symbol of religious liberty. What is frightening is the use of taxpayer money to financially support the existence of a religious symbol that is not sacred to all people.
